On the Cover: Summer 2005

This amazingly realistic photo of Bill Stewart’s (#29462) Top Flight P-51, was taken by Carl Purgold (#7125). The model is a reproduction of a still active P-51 called “Moonbeam McSwine”. It was originally flown in the European theater of World War II, by Captain Bill Whisner, of the 352nd FIghter Group. The model is powered by a 3W50 engine, and is covered with individual panels of chrome “Ultracote”, cut and overlapped to replicate the scale aluminum panels. It took Bill eleven months to build. Photo was taken at the Colonia Virginia Aeromodelers flying site, near Williamsburg.
