On the Cover: Fall 2000

The DeHavilland Otter on the front cover was graciously shot by Ray Pedersen as he stood shoulder deep in the lake in British Columbia with a $9,000 camera. This floatplane began three years ago with three modelers, George Hutchings, Ted Russell and Lorne Barber. The team obtained factory three views from DeHavilland fabricated the plug and made fiberglass fuselages and cowls, one for each team member. The size is 1/5 scale or 20% of the full size aircraft.
The wingspan is 140", weighs 65 lbs., uses 13 servos, a Jomar Glitch Buster, and two 1800 mAH battery packs. Power is provided by a 100cc Quadra with a homemade muffler and mounted on a Byron Purr Power system. The servos activate fore flaps and the aft flap arrangements. The scale aspects are right down to a full interior with an accurate dash panel. The Otter is finished in K&B Super Poxy and automotive enamel covered with K&B clear.
