I recently received a sample of a new control surface hinge from Phoenix Hobby Products, a standard or "butt" hinge, and one designed for about a 1/4" offset hinge. These appear to be quite well made, of nylon, with a metal pin which is pinched for positive retention on the end. These hinges are about twice the thickness of the standard DuBro or Klett type hinge, and should serve well in all but the heaviest of planes, meaning anything under about 50 lbs weight.
In my torture test of the hinge, I pulled out the
metal hinge pin, twisting it up like a pretezel by twisting the hinge
with two pairs of pliers, without tearing the hinge ears. A well-made
item that seems perfectly adapted for almost all of the standard-sized
giant models. Recommended.
