The Plan Re-View this time is of the GENERAL WESTERN METEOR, which is a parasol monoplane, similar to the Fairchild 22. These plans were drawn by Dick Wangler and come on three and a half sheets.
SHEET NUMBER ONE: Shows fuselage left side view, with fin and rudder with stab and elevator. The fuselage is built-up of quarter square longerons, either spruce or hard balsa (basswood could be used) with quarter square uprights and diagonals and all joints are gussetted. This airplane had a round engine and since projected weight is 20 to 22 lbs. a Quadra is recommended. The Saito five cylinder radial should do just fine in this plane. Fuselage is finished with formers and stringers. The empennage is built up of laminated balsa leading and trailing edges with ribs. A bit unusual is the mounting of the stab low on the rudder, just above the fuselage. A good solid mounting for the stab is used and the empennage is functionally wire braced.
SHEET NUMBER TWO: Shows the right wing panel. The airfoil on this airplane is scale. It's the Gottingen 398 and has a slight undercambre. The center section is also shown on this sheet. The wing is built in three sections. Ribs are 1/8th balsa except for the butt ribs which are ply. The front and rear spars 1/4 square with shear webbing from butt to tip. The leading edge is sheeted with 1/16 balsa and the center section is sheeted top and bottom between spars with 3/32 balsa. All exposed ribs are cap stripped. Ailerons are built up and are friese type with cable actuation providing push-pull. Interplane or rather brace struts are made from 3/16 inch steel brake line and covered with 5/8 inch K&S streamline tubing. A 3/16 nail is soldered into each end and drilled got 4-40 bolts, very unique. All strut fittings are shown on this sheet.
SHEET NUMBER THREE: This is a reverse of Sheet Number Two showing the left wing panel etc.
SHEET NUMBER FOUR:
This is the half sheet showing fuselage formers with stringer
locations, drawings and dimensions for cabane struts and
landing gear are shown alI have some very good, unique ideas
that will work very well. This is an excellent set of plans with a
lot of thought put into them. It's not hard to tell, the designer is
also a builder and flier. That Saito five cylinder would look and
do great in this airplane. The plans are available from: JETLINE
Products, P.O. Box 210022, Bellevue, Tennessee 37221. These
are quarter scale airplanes with a wingspan of 96 inches.
