WEDELL WILLIAMS RACER
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821

Wedell Williams Racer

The WEDELL WILLIAMS THOMPSON TROPHY RACER has always been one of my favorites and Don Neill has drawn one in what I assume is 1/3 scale. Wingspan is 95.5 inches and weight is given as 42 pounds. Power is a 3.7 Sachs. This is quite an airplane and also a very good plan of it. The plan comes on three sheets and sells for $25.00. It is available from Don Neill, 1120 South Fortieth St. Lincoln, Nebraska 68510.

The first sheet shows the fuselage left side view and the formers and stringers. The fuselage is built upside down over the top view of the fuselage and the wing and stab are mounted before removing from the plan to get the correct incidences. The fiber glass cowl and wheel pants are also available from Don Neill at 20 and 25 dollars respectively, plus five dollars shipping. The landing gear placement is also shown on this sheet along with the built up fin and rudder. This airplane has an extremely short nose moment, so I would keep the aft end as light as possible.

Sheet number two shows the fuselage top view which is used to build on and the left wing panel. The wing is built in three sections for easier transportation. The wing is built in the usual manner with ribs of balsa and ply with maple and white spruce ribs in the center section to support the landing gear loads. Steel and brass tubs telescope to hold the outboard sections and they are supported by functional flying and landing wires. I would use the Dubro 4-40 rods and ends covered with streamlined aluminum tubing by K&S. The built up stab and elevator are also shown on this sheet.

Sheet three shows the right wing panel, with landing gear attachment and drawings on how to make the gear. I think this should build into a very nice airplane and it should be fast.
