FAIRCHILD PT-19
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821

PT-19

Wendell Hostetler's latest plan is a 26% scale offering of the FAIRCHILD PT-19 trainer of the World War Two era, and a good one it is. The wing span is 114 inches and weight is projected as 22 to 26 pounds. Wing loading is projected to be around 30 ounces and the plan comes on two sheets and power is given as 2 to 5 horsepower. Should be a real goer with a Q-50 or equivalent.

The fuselage is 3/16 balsa sheet sides with 1/4 inch balsa sheet on the inside back to slightly behind the wing trailing edge. The sheet sides have top and bottom longerons and bulkheads are 1/8 hard balsa of various widths, cowling is available from T&D fibreglas, and a Q-50 is shown mounted. The turtle deck is shown sheeted.

The landing gear is Robart scale shock struts. The entire empennage is from 3/8 sheet balsa and is removable as a unit. A scale tailwheel is shown. The wing is mounted with one degree of positive incidence.

The wing is built in three pieces. The center which carries the landing gear is constructed using tow box spars and is completely sheeted with balsa. All ribs are 1/8 balsa with the unsheeted area of the outboard panels cap stripped. The outboard panels have top and bottom spars as the main spar which can very easily be made into an I beam section. The rear spar is solid and slips through the center of the ribs. There are plywood tongues in the outboard panels that slip into the box spars in the center section and are bolted in. All ribs are shown on this sheet and ailerons are built up and the flap outline is shown on the plan. Aileron servos are mounted in the outboard panels with extensions used.

This is another very good plan, but then Mr. Hostetler has never put out a bad one and at the projected weight the Q-50 will haul it with authority. I have a 27 pound flybaby monoplane with a Q-50 in it and this engine really makes it go. For more information, check Wendell's Web Page.
