1930 FLEET TRAINER
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821

The next plan is the 1930 FLEET TRAINER, Model two by Ron Weiss, in one third scale. Having already built the concept Models quarter scale fleet once and with the plans to another one on the basement wall I find this plan very similar - the big difference being in the size.

The plan comes on two sheets. The first sheet has a left side view of the fuselage and it is constructed of 5/16 square spruce or pine longerons uprights and diagonals with all joints gussetted forward end is lined inside with ply from the rear instrument panel forward, with the bottom of the ply extending rearward to include the bottom wing rear spar. Landing gear is made from 3/16 music wire and is clamped to a grooved block with quarter inch ply to sheet aluminum and 4-40 bolts and blind nuts... I had the front strut come loose and swing the gear back under the rear cockpit. You can imagine what this does to the C/G. You wind up flying with full down elevator just to stay level. Engine recommended is 2.4 to 3.7 C.l. displacement. Since the weight given on the plan is 26 to 28 pounds, a full shock gear is a good idea. A Cb tailwheel is shown. Fin and rudder are built up construction.

The second sheet contains both top wing panels and the left lower panel. Spar construction is of the pox type and must be built before wing construction can start. Airfoil is non scale semi symmetrical. Ribs are from 1/8 sheet, with false ribs between each full rib. The top wing is in two panels with no center section. I could find no end view of the aileron so I assume it is the typical model airplane construction of a leading edge tapered on the bottom and hinge at the top. Both upper and lower wings have drag bracing. Stabilizer and elevator on this sheet and the stab is built up and is lifting stab.
