PIPER L-4 "GRASSHOPPER"
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821

The first plan this issue is our old friend Jim Pepino's version of the J-3 Cub in military clothing called the Piper L-4 Grasshopper in quarter scale, and a great plan it is. It comes on two sheets with the first sheet showing a left side view and the top view. It's constructed similar to the old Cleveland and Megows kits with an appropriate built up structure of 3/8 square longerons uprights and diagonals. Power sour e shown is a 1.20 four stroke. My personal opinion is that the O.S. Gemini 1.60 twin would be a better source of power, at least the performance would be better. To use a 1.20 you would have to choose your lumber very carefully and keep it light. A scale shock gear is shown, inside seating and instrument panel is shown. The door that is unique to the cub series is shown and can be made to open, both top and bottom. The empennage is built up and looks to be substantially strong, and all brace wires are shown and should not be omitted. Construction is such that the stabilizer could be made to vary the incidence with a servo. This is something I've always been going to do but haven't yet. The tailwheel is modified to scale from the stock CB unit.

Sheet two is the wing with rib templates and stab and elevator construction. The wing is built of two I beam spars and is in a left and right panel with the center section being an integral part of the fuselage. Ribs are 1/8 sheet balsa and are cap stripped. The great thing is that the airlerons are true Friese type which is 100% scale as opposed to the usual model airplane hinging which is so prevalent in so many kits and plans.

Lift strut construction is also shown and is made from ready shaped material purchased from Hobby Lobby. Leading edge sheeting is from 1/32 balsa and the Glass engine cowl can be purchased from Fibre Glas master and the airplane uses Dubro cub wheels.

This is an excellent plan, you can see that Jim Pepino has done his homework. It can be purchased from Scale plans and Photo Service, 3209 Madison Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27403.
