In the winter issue I re-viewed GEORGE JORDAN's quarter scale "ROSE PARAKEET", which was a superb set of plans. This the spring issue we have another "ROSE PARAKEET", This set of plans by "PAT" MASSEY, IMAA 7528. This set of plans are in One-Third scale. These are also a super set of plans. A blueprint on three sheets and very well engineered and drawn, as are all of "Pat" Massey's plans!
The FIRST SHEET contains left side and top view drawings for the fuselage, along with formers and bulkheads plus the fin and rudder. The fuselage is built up of quarter square spruce longerons, uprights and diagonal, all gusseted. Inside of the fuselage is lined with 1/32 ply from the firewall to the rear of the cockpit. Top of the fuselage is covered with 1/32 ply from the rear of the cockpit to the firewall. A Super Tiger 3000 is shown mounted on heavy maple beam mounts anchored to the first two 1/8 plywood formers and the firewall. Cabane struts are formed of 5/32 wire with fairings. The landing gear is formed of 3/16 wire with fairings. The tailwheel mechanism is modified from a C.B. unit. Fin and rudder are constructed of balsa with a laminated edge of basswood strips. Trailing edge of the fin and the leading edge of the rudder are 3/8 birch doweling. Rudder is cable controlled.
SHEET TWO contains the four wing panels which have two beam spars with false leading edge ribs and all ribs are cap stripped. All wing tips are laminated from 1/16" x 1/2" basswood strips. Ailerons on the lower wings only are almost full span and are torque rod operated. Wing panels are attached similar to the full sized aircraft. AII flying wire and strut fittings are shown on the plan. This set of plans are so complete it leaves nothing for you to guess about. Of course there are some things you will probably change, as I do not think any modeler builds exactly according to the plan. I know that I have never built a model like the plans show. But I will say that if built as "Pat" has drawn it, you will have a very light and strong aircraft. After looking at this set of plans I can't see anything right off the bat that I would change. "Pat" really has his act together!
SHEET NUMBER THREE is just chucked full of goodies
including landing gear layout, cabane brace wires, interplane struts,
stab and elevator which is constructed similar to the fin and rudder,
except that the stab has variable incidence built in and I believe
it is ground adjustable. Instrument panel layout is shown, along
with dummy cylinder heads for a continental A-40. Cowling is
constructed from two layers of 1/32 ply and separated in the center
horizontally. Even the cowl latches drawn on the plan are similar
to automobile engine hood latches, somewhat. The nose block
is of basswood, similar to the Travelair 12Q or stock Great Lakes.
This set of plans is well worth the cost and there is also a seven
page instruction booklet. It can be purchased from: "Pat" Massey,
Pampa, Texas. Plans shipped rolled in a heavy square container.
