This is an open cockpit biplane amphibian. The design is of the Savoia-Marchetti Amphibian with which the Italian firm attempted to invade the American market in the 1920's. The BUDD Company took the design and converted everything to Stainless Steel except the wing covering, which is fabric. Lew Pancoast has taken this design and produced it in what appears to be Quarter Scale, giving a wing span of 68 inches. The hull is built up of quarter square pine longerons and diagonals, bulkheads are balsa and light ply and covered with Dacrom, glass cloth and chrome Monokote to simulate the stainless steel. Engine is mounted on a built-up structure on the top wing. A jack-screw or retract servo is used to raise the rather simple landing gear, and the radio is mounted in the extreme nose of the hull. Generous use of brass and aluminum and steel tubing is used for struts, fittings and superstructure holding the top wing. The empenage is built up of balsa and ply with the stab and elevator mounted about half way to the top of the fin. Tail wheel is scale and is functional with the use of a coil compression spring. Wing tip floats are from balsa and are glassed.
The second plan sheet has the hull bulkheads, the
stab and elevator and the wings. Both wings are identical with the bottom
wing being shorter and the ailerons in the top wing only. Airfoil
appears to be a modified Clark-Y. All wing ribs have lightening
holes. Main spar is 3/8 x 1/4 pine top and bottom of the ribs, and
rear spar is 3/16 x 1/4 pine top and bottom of the ribs. It would be
very easy to make the spars in an "I" beam. The leading edge
of the wing is a birch dowel, and the trailing edge is 5/16 x 3/4 balsa.
The construction of all struts and fittings are shown. I calculate
the wing area to be an effective 1170 square inches and would
guess the weight to be between 13 and 15 pounds. At 14 pounds
the wing loading is 27.50 ounces and power comes from a 1.0
four stroker. This is an exceptional plan set, with lots of detail and
would make an interesting project. Selling price $20.00 post paid.
