VULTEE BT-13 - Pat Massey
Review by Chuck Spencer

v8-2-25a.jpg - 8.7 K

This one is also by Pat Massey of Pampa, Texas. It is the Vultee BT-13, also known as the Vultee Vibrator. Pat's prototype was powered by a Q-.50 and weighed in at 27 pounds. Not being overly endowed with wing area (1365 square inches), it came out at a loading of 47 ounces. Pat reported the Q-.50 was adequate at sea level, but at the altitude of Pampa, Texas -- 3600 feet, the Q-.50 was not enough. Apparently the Vibrator snapped and went in from about 350 feet. (Note: Pat is rebuilding the BIG BT-13 and plans to power the model with a 3.7 Sachs-Dolmer engine.) Pat states that the model is for the experienced pilot, as you have to watch it to keep the maneuvers wide and fast, and on final with flaps down, it's a "Pussy Cat."

Sheet Number One:

This sheet shows the fuselage and is built-up on 3/16-inch square spruce longerons, uprights and cross pieces and ply formers. Pat shows a Q-.50 as the power plant attached to the firewall. The cowl is built up from laminated 1/32 ply with a turned brasswood front ring. As of last January there were not plans for anyone to produce a fuselage of glass. A fuselage top view is shown on this sheet, along with the fin and rudder which are built-up of balsa, bass and 1/16 sheet balsa. A sprung tailwheel is also shown.

Sheet Number Two:

This sheet shows both wing panels, with "I" beam spar, laminated tips and 3/32 inch balsa ribs. Airfoil section appears to be almost symetrical. The wing is sheeted with 3/32 inch balsa. Flaps and ailerons are friese type with scale hinging. There is a servo at each aileron and one to operate the flaps through a torque rod set up. All wing, aileron and flap ribs are shown on this sheet.

Sheet Number Three:

This sheet shows the stab and elevator construction which is the same as the fin and rudder. All landing gear and tailwheel details are shown. Wing dihedral brace is shown and also the built-up sliding canopy. These plans are available for $30.00 from Pat Massey. Also included is a six page instruction booklet. I believe this is a very good set of plans of a plane that has needed to be modeled for a long time.
