GILMORE RED LION - Wendel Hostetler
Review by Dick Garmhausen FS-37

The Gilmore "Red Lion" was the work of Jimmy Wendell. The Model Number 44 with a smooth cowl contour. The Gilmore Oil Company sponsored Rosco Turner in the 1932 Air Race where he placed third. Later, with a new sponsor the "Red Lion" was replaced by 20th Century Fox and colorful paint scheme was a thing of the past. The engine and cowl replaced by a more conventional cowl with rocker cover fairings. The "Red Lion" was a classic among the racing fleet of that time.

Wendell Hostetler's Gilmore "Red Lion" plans are a set of well drawn plans for a classic aircraft. As outlined in the instructions, this plane is NOT for the beginner. An experienced builder is also advised that liberties may be taken to adapt the plane to their specific wants. I would recommend that considerable time be devoted to the study and consuming of the large amount of information supplied with the plans. This is true of any set of plans but most important on the more complex scale plans. The "Red Lion" flies very realistically. Being a racer, it is NOT an aerobatic plane, but it is a real crowd pleaser with the unique color scheme and trim lines. Plans can be obtained from Wendel Hostetler, Orrville, Ohio, or check Wendell's Web Page.
