RAINBOW HAWK - Clayton Thoms
Review by Chuck Spencer IMAA 821

v7-1-20b.jpg - 8.0 K

The next plan is of Clayton Thoms' Rainbow Hawk, and was reviewed in the last Fall issue, it didn't make it, so I'll do it now. This is a biplane with swept back wings and is a very good looking airplane. I saw a video tape recently of this airplane flying and will say it really performs. Plans can be obtained from B&B Specialties, 14234 Cleveland Road, Granger, Indiana 46530.

The plan is on three sheets and is chock full of isometric drawings and construction notes. Mr. Thoms is quite a draftsman. Wingspan is 64", wing area is 1600 squares, weight is 18 to 20 pounds, and power is a Quadra Q50. Wing loading at 20 pounds is almost 29 ounces per square foot. So you can see this machine will be quite a performer. Fuselage sides are 1/8 balsa sheet with lightening holes with plywood reinforcement from the fire wall to the rear of the cockpit and wing saddle. The firewall is adequately braced with hardwood beams that also tie right in with the landing gear mounting plate. Cowling is of the four cylinder horizontally opposed type and completely covers the Q50 and still maintains adequate cooling. Landing gear is spring tempered aluminum, with 4" CB wheels in wheel pants. Tailwheel is mounted to the fuselage ala Goldberg or Dubro type. I would opt for the CB leaf type. From the cockpit forward the fuse is sheet covered with stringers on the rear fuse all four sides. Fuse length is 60" long and 6" wide. Empennage is built up of balsa and spruce and is Fabric covered. Fuselage formers are 1/8 sheet and fuse is internally braced with spruce uprights, crosspieces and diagonals. Cabane Pylon is built up of hard wood and very securely mounted.

Wings are foam cores with balsa leading and trailing edges. The leading edge of the cores are sheeted with 1/16 balsa and capstripped and tips are built of sheet balsa and ribs. The top wing is swept and the bottom is straight. The Rainbow Hawk has four ailerons with a servo mounted in each bottom wing panel at the aileron. Ailerons are built up of balsa. Interplane struts are of the I type and made of ply. Mr. Thoms has covered the construction of every little detail of his airplane on the plans. Nothing is left for the builder to try to figure out.

Sheet three contains full sized painting and trimming templates. The Rainbow Hawk is trimmed similar to the Christian Eagle. Fuse side template, cowl and landing gear details, empennage rigging details and several other details notes and drawings. In going through my B&B catalogue I find the Rainbow Hawk plan is available for $29.95 and also available are a glass cowl, wheelpants fuselage, landing gear, prebuilt cabane struts and foam wing cores. You can't beat that. If you need a sexy looking bipe that performs better than it looks, try the Rainbow Hawk, you won't be disap- pointed.

The next plan is from Jim Pepino's Scale Plans and Photo Service of Greensboro, North Carolina. Jim had a booth at last years Toledo show and did a "Land Office Business" selling plans and photo packs. Hopefully he will be there this year also. People like Jim who perform a service for the scale
