General Specifications
Sheet 1 depicts side and top elevation. Construction is all balsa. The fuselage is primarily slabsided with formers forming the shape and longerons providing strength. Longerons are spruce spars. The two seat version is shown with a T&D Fiberglass, cutdown "Christen Eagle" canopy. The spinner is 3 1/2" P-51 style by C.B. Associates and main wheels are Dubro's 4" inflatables. For tailwheel, C.B. Associates heavy duty unit is available. T&D Fiberglass, and the designer indicates that, based on demand, he will consider making S1 canopy available.
Personal Opinion:
In view of the decline in the number of giant scalers building from plans,
this Pitts Special is most welcome. The design is very simple, easy to
understand and even a beginner with basic experience shouldn't have any
difficulties building and flying this well-known aerobatic plane.
Based on wing area and approx. weight, wing loading equates to 33-35 oz./sq.ft., which is very desirable. It has just the right w.l. to avoid float during landings, and not so much as to call for high speed landings.
The designer says that the prototype flew well on a
Quadra 2.0 cu. in. engine, but for full vertical capability a 3.0 cu.in.
engine is preferred. I would recommend this plan set with no hesitation
at all. The topic will interest the experienced modeler while its
simplicity will attract the novice. It is well worth the money invested
in its purchase. Source: Tom Thumb Sky Tracings, Mequon, WI.
