GRUMMAN "BEARCAT" F8F
Review by Les Hard (LM-7)

v6-2-21.jpg - 22.6 K

Nick Ziroli's Giant Grumman "Bearcat" F8F 1 and 2 - four large well detailed sheets of drawings. Sheet Number ONE, 3' x 5'. This plan is of the full side detailing of the fuselage including the vertical stab and rudder. On this sheet also is the plan for the horizontal stab and elevator. Specs of the model: Span: 90" with a center cord of 24 1/2" and a tip cord of 12". Fuselage length: 67", Horizontal Stab Length: 30 1/2", Vertical Rudder Length: 18". Power suggested: 2 to 5 h.p., fixed gear. (NOTE: there are two good sources of retractable gear that could be worked into this model with ample space in the big wing to take care of them. Knights of the Air and The Likes Co. both offer retracts.) Main wheels shown are 5 1/2".

Full construction shown and the fuselage built around a sturdy crutch assembly. A very unique engine mount is shown. It is of a box configuration and can be easily modified to take the variety of BIG engines now being offered to builders and flyers of Giant Scale R/C Model Aircraft. Fuselage is sheet covered as are the horizontal and vertical stabs with the control surfaces (elevator, rudder, ailerons) fabric covered. Cowl and canopy available from: Nick Ziroli Models or Hanger "One" Hobbies.

Sheet Number TWO, 3' x 5'. This plan shows left wing panel and center section, and shows very adequate built up spars. Aileron-flap assembly is full length with individual servos for each aileron and flap. Crutch construction plan is on this sheet. Leading edge is sheeted back to the front spar assembly, all control hook-ups are defined in detail. Instructions are also given in detail.

Sheet Number THREE. Right Wing panel construction plus all rib patterns clearly shown. All detailing as to positioning of lettering and trim markings are given. Very self explanatory. This plan sheet is also 3' x 5'.

Sheet Number FOUR. Sheet size 3' x 6'6", contains all patterns for fuselage formers, some of the center section ribs, and all wood parts that must be cut to shape. Wire gear shapes and other hardware patterns. (NOTE: to save your patterns, you can get template material in big sheets from See Temp.

Partial Wood Parts Kit Available Now!

Now available is a partial kit of all wood parts that are needed to get you going on the construction of this BIG Ziroli Grumman "Bearcat". The kit contains all formers, ribs, and other wood parts which must be cut out for this big model. Firewall is of five-ply construction and is well sanded. Ribs are both ply and balsa as required in the plans. Fuselage formers are cut out of light ply and all stringer notches are cut. Wing tip blocks and many other balsa parts have been cut and are included. All parts have been sanded. A lot of thought has gone into producing this partial kit. All the builder has to furnish is the sheet and strip wood for construction.

Kit is being offered by Hanger "ONE" Hobbies. They are also offering partial kits and fiberglass items for other Ziroli models, including the F4U Corsair, Curtiss Hawk P-40, AM-6 Zero, Fokker DR-1 and, of course, for the Grumman F8F 1 and 2 Bearcat.
