LINDBERGH'S LOCKHEED "SIRIUS"

Two large sheets, 3' 6" x 8' 0", clearly defined and well detailed, with construction information well defined. Specs for this BIG model are: Span: 102", Fuselage: 66", Wing Area: 1750 sq. in., Wing Loading: 20 oz. per square foot, Weight: Estimated 20-22 lbs., Power Recommended: 2 to 4 h.p., Power Source shown: Q50cc Quadra. Plans sheet Number ONE shows the top and side elevation of the very adequate fuselage. Construction is of balsa and ply. All fuselage formers are clearly shown and in a very easy to work configuration. Horizontal and Verticle Stabilizers are of 3/8" balsa construction (sheet) and are lightened to save weight. Fuselage longerons are 1/4" x 1/4" balsa, formers are of 1/8" sheet balsa. Firewall is of 1/2" 7-ply, protected either by glass cloth and epoxy or epoxy alone. Engine mounting details well detailed. Entire fuselage is sheeted from just behind the big fiberglass cowl to the tail cone. An access hatch is shown just ahead of the main windscreen. Canopy over the two cockpits is made of clear plastic formed to shape, thickness indicated on plan.

Maim gear construction with fine detailing of shock gear assembly shown. Suggested wheels are: 6" C.B. Associate. Big fiberglass cowl and wheel pants are from T and D Fiberglas Specialists. Main gear is attached to the wing center section. Entire fuselage is covered with Super Coverite and finished with two coats of nitrate dope, sanded smooth and then primed with a lacquer base automotive primer, sanded then a finish coat of black automotive lacquer is sprayed on. Final trim locations and lettering is shown in their proper positions. Color scheme on the prototype was as with the original aircraft - black - orange and gold. Note: Tailwheel construction details shown on this plan sheet. Hardware positioning as well details as are all controls.

Plans sheet number TWO shows wing construction detailing and all controls positioned. Left wing panel and center section wing panel plan can be reversed to get proper configuration to complete entire wing assembly. Wing totals 102" in length. Root Cord: 20", Tip Cord 13". All rib patterns shown, front spars are 1/4" x 3/8" basswood with main substiffening by light ply, rear spars are 1/4" x 1/4" square basswood boxed with light ply.

Rib stations, ailerons, gussets, brackets are clearly shown and entire wing is sheeted as with the fuselage. Sanded smooth and given two coats of clear nitrate dope. Covered with super coverite, then primed with automotive lacquer based primer, sanded smooth, finish coat of Tangerine Orange automotive lacquer is sprayed on the surface of the wing Final detailing positions are indicated, numbers and decals. Prototype was on display during the 31st R/C Model Exposition at Toledo, Ohio in late March.
