FRENCH DALOTEL D165 - Doug MacBrien
Review by Chuck Spencer 821

This is plans set Number Three, Doug's latest effort, the French Dalotel D165, which Hanno Prettner used at the last "Tournament of Champions" to win with. Doug says his version is every bit as aerobatic, when using the Q35 Quadra or Senoah G-38. Wing span is 86 inches and wing loading at 16 pounds is 26.6 ounces per square. The Plan Set consists of two sheets, plus a sheet of full size patterns.

Sheet Number One:

This plan sheet shows the left fuselage side with fin and rudder plus engine mounting and landing gear mounting. Fuselage construction is sheet balsa sides with spruce longerons, quarter square on the bottom and quarter by half spruce on the top. Uprights and diagonals are quarter square balsa.

The turtle deck is formers and stringers and is fabric covered. The fin is built up and the rudder has a balsa sheet center with ribs added on each side and laminated edges. A shock absorbing tail wheel assembly is shown. The cowling is shown as built up on the plan, but T & D Fiberglass has one already moulded for you. A fixed landing gear is shown that is fully shock absorbing, but retracts could be added with very little extra effort and the wing is thick enough to handle it without being weakened. William Brothers 5 1/4 inch smooth contour wheels are shown. Robert steel hinge points are generously used on all control surfaces.

Sheet Number Two:

This plan sheet shows the right wing panel, fuselage top view and the stab and elevator. The wing is of multiple spar construction with shear webbing on the main spars. The wing is sheeted with three-thirty second balsa and the ailerons are built of a sheet core with ribs on each side.

Controls are operated by bellcranks with one heavy duty servo in the center and push-pull cables running to the bellcranks. Wing tips are semi-Hoerner tips and the airfoil is fully symetrical, as on a pattern ship. The wing is stressed for a seven "G" plus load. The stab is built up construction and sheeted with one sixteenth sheet. Elevator construction is the same as the aileron and is operated by two servos with cables.

The DALOTEL is a simple airplane that is very aerobatic and Doug MaCBriens' rendering of these plans are very professionally done, leaving nothing to be guessed at. These plans also come with a fifteen page instruction book, construction photos and a statistic and spec sheet. Also a flight report. I particularly like the spec sheet and flight report. You know exactly what to expect before you even start cutting and gluing. All of Doug's plans are equally as good. After reviewing the three he already has, I'm anxious to see what will be next. I have enjoyed reviewing the plans and only hope I've covered most of the high points. Your money will be well invested here. As I have said before, if it isn't there, I can't review it. In this case, believe me it is all there!
