KINNER SPORT - Dave Reid
Review by Chuck Spencer 821

v4-2-65b.jpg - 7.1 K

The last issue I reviewed Woody Frantz's Kinner Sport-wing. This issue Dave Reid's Kinner Sport. Which is the economy version of the same airplane. Dave's Kinner Sport spans 117 inches, which is 9 3/4 feet, with 2100 inches of wing area and a projected weight of 25 lbs. for a wing loading of about 27 1/2 ounces per square foot.

The fuselage is built of 1/4 square Basswood, longerons, uprights and diagonals. Formers are from 1/8th balsa, except thicker where specified. Firewall is 3/8th inch plywood backed up with a 1 1/4" inch thick balsa block, from 1/4 inch ply to mount the Quadra on. Dummy engine cylinders are modified from Air Design (Napoleon, Ohio) cylinders. Tailwheel is C.B. Associates heavy duty type. Empennage is built up of Balsa and Basswood, with laminated edges. Since this is a two place side by side open cockpit job, the cockpit doors can be made to open a la automobile type. Landing Gear is made from 1/4 inch music wire, with operating shock struts... construction method is shown on the plan.

The wing is from 1/8th Balsa ribs, except where noted, with 3/8th Basswood spars front and 1/4 inch spars in rear with shear webbing on one side. I think I would add webbing on both sides with such a long span, and effectively have a box spar. Tips are from laminations. Ailerons are practically full span with the servo mounted in the root bay. It would be interesting to try a torque rod or tube set up and make a balanced aileron. Wing struts are built up from Rod with balsa fairings. A very nice plan set of the Kinner Sport, and should fly very well. These plans are available from: DGA Designs, 135 East Main Street, Phelps, NY 14532 Phone 1-315-548-3779.
