WACO UPF-7 - Jerry Behrens
Review by Chuck Spencer 821

For the Third plan to be Re-Viewed in this issue: It is of the quarter scale WACO UPF-7 by Jerry Behrens. It is a good looking job with that distinctive UPF landing gear. The fuselage is built up about the same as the other two models re-viewed, using V4 inch square spruce longerons and N inch square balsa uprights and diagonals. The formers are 1/8 inch sheet balsa and lots and lots of stringers, which achieves that great stringered look. All joints are gusseted and the plans show a Quadra mounted in the model. Since most stock Wacos had exposed radial engines, the plans shows a cowl, which is a good idea, it completely encloses the Quadra.

Landing gear is built up of 3/16 inch steel music wire, and the shock is achieved by use of a heavy spring in tension. Empennage is built of strips laminated balsa outline, and strip balsa.

Wings are constructed with two box spars, built up of 1/8 inch by V4 inch spruce with plywood sides... 1/8 inch balsa is used for the ribs. The cabane struts are of 1/8 inch welding rod and covered with balsa which is sanded to a streamlined shape. Ailerons are typical construction with slanted leading edge and hinged at the top. Both wings are built in one piece. wing span dimension (measurements) are not indicated on the plans, nor is the wing loading. But I measured them and the span is 90 inches and then guestimated the weight at around 22 lbs. At this weight the wing loading is 20.80 ounces per square foot. Cowl and wheel pants can be purchased from Fibreglass Master. Plans can be obtained from: BEHREN PLAN SERVICE, 31-29 Healy Avenue, Far Rockaway, NY 11691.

I'm reminded of Chuck Cunningham's comment in the latest RCM, you can tell a modeler's age by the kind of airplanes he has. We tend to favor the airplanes that were built when we were young... I agree, but man, I sure like it.
