The next plan of a Douglas AD-3 Skyraider is by Herb Hall of DP Systems in Houston, Texas. At 1/5 scale the fuselage of this airplane requires two plan sheets, the complete plan requiring five sheets. This is not the usual blue print. This plan is on very heavy white paper with solid well defined black lines. Very easy to read. The fuselage is built of 3/8 square spruce longerons, uprights and diagonals, and sheeted with 3/32 balsa. Engine suggested is a minimum of 50cc with a larger one desired. The cowl is so large and deep that the fuel tank sits behind the engine and ahead of the firewall. The second sheet contains the rear half of the fuselage and the fin and rudder, and also a top view of the rear fuse. There are also some fuselage formers shown on the first two sheets along with a detailed tailwheel and carrier hook. Dive break doors are also shown.
Third Sheet: Shows the left wing panel construction, with the rib templates. I should mention that the root chord is twenty five and a half inches. Ribs are from 1/8 balsa with spruce spars and the panels are sheeted with 3/32 inch balsa. A very ingenious flap actuating system is shown.
Sheet Four: Shows the front half of the fuselage top view and the stab and elevator. The stab and elevator are built up and sheeted with 3/32 inch balsa. The fuselage view on this sheet shows the actuating mechanism for the dive brake doors. Also the firewall template is shown. There is a three view of the airplane on this sheet.
Sheet Five: Shows the right wing panel with the rest of the rib templates and a full span drawing of the main wing spar. Wing span is ten feet and I would guess the weight to be somewhere over 40 pounds. This is an excellent plan, and although I put the airplane in the HUGE catagory it still wouldn't be too hard to move around, considering that I have to remove the wheels from my Balsa USA Sopwith Pup to even get it out of the basement. This airplane is definitely a worthwhile project, especially for those of you who flew or maintained the old SPAD.
The plan is available from DP Systems, Inc. 1842
Tattenhall, Houston, Texas 77008. The plan comes rolled and is $30.00
postage paid. I think the last two years I've reviewed all of Herb
Halls plans except the Aronca C-3 and they are all excellent plans.
He also produced semi kits. For more information contact him
