PIPER PAWNEE
By Chuck Spencer 821

The first plan this time is a quarter scale Piper Pawnee by Dick Graham and marketed by our old friend Jim Pepino of Scale Plans and Photo Service. It has a nine foot span and received 99 static points at the 1980 Nats so you know it's pretty elose to being scale.

The plan comes on three sheets and the first sheet shows the left fuselage view and the fin and rudder. The fuselage is built up of hard balsa longerons 3/8 inch square with formers and stringers. From the cockpit forward the top is constructed with some foam along with the plywood formers. The area just ahead of the cockpit is the dust bin and there is an opening on the fuse top with a hatch cover. Engine used is a Q-40 mounted with what appears to be about 3 or 4 degrees downthrust. The cowling is fiberglass and is available from Fiberglass Master. The cockpit is built up. Landing gear is from 1/16 wire. The fin and rudder are built up from balsa with laminated balsa edges.

Sheet Two: Shows both wing panels and the stab and elevator. The wing is built in two panels which are both shown and is built up of balsa ribs and spruce spars, with false ribs, and the tips are laminated balsa strips. The airfoil section is a Clark Y and without a doubt is scale. All struts are made from hardwood and a very unique method of making the strut fairings is shown: the leading edge is sheeted and the whole airplane is fabric covered. The left wing panel shows a neat landing light arrangement. The stab and elevator are built up the same as the fin and rudder.

Sheet Three: Contains the fuselage formers and a very detailed dust bin, with a wind driven agitator that appears as though it will work very well.

This is a very good plan and it would be great to see this airplane making a low pass across your field spreading some sort of insect killer. The plan is available either rolled or folded from Scale Plans and Photo Service, 3209 Madison Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27403. Also available is a twenty two page set of detailed drawings at ten dollars and a large factory blueprint for seven-fifty. The construction plans require a two dollar shipping fee. Folded $35.00 and rolled $38.00.
