Three months, ago in my column for R/C Model Builder, I gave the manufacturers the criteria for what I would consider the Ultimate Servo. There were quite a few little things that I requested, rather radical departures from standard servo practice, and frankly, I thought that it was a nice idea. but probably an exercise in futility for quite a while, because such a servo would take quite a bit of developmental engineering, since virtually none of the items currently in use would be useable in the servo I envisioned. It would be an item that would require all new parts, and if you have any dealings with any manufacturer, you will know that any item that can't use at least a few currently available parts is looked at with great fear.
About three weeks after that article appeared, I received a package from World Engines, with a note to the effect that they had read my article, and "Maybe You'd like to take a look at this."
Inside was one of the most georgeous pieces of engineering that I have ever seen! It was the World Engines S-16 servo, which has been on the market for about two years, but has been a real sleeper. It is about twice the physical size of a Kraft or EMS 20-H, and is rated at one hundred fifty-six inch ounces of torque! (156 in/ozs.) That's Three times as powerful as the most powerful common servo (KPS-20H) on the market now! It has features that are just plain beautiful.
A 1/4" square output shaft, as opposed to the 1/8" on all other servos, all output arms of extremely strong glass-reinforced nylon, rather than soft nylon, the output shaft bearing is off the shaft bearing of an O.S. .25, the output gear is 1/4" thick, driven by a brass pinion gear and the shaft for that pinion gear has brass-bushed holes in the case! Everything is totally o-ring sealed, and on and on. I couldn't have designed this servo better myself if I had been given totally unlimited funds.
While I haven't had a chance to give the servo extensive
testing yet, and therefore can't give it a completely unconditional approval,
I have never seen a better looking item. Period. It lists now for
$49.95, direct or from your World Engines Dealer.
