It seems like just about everything that we use around models has some form of vinyl or rubber on it, and these items are subject to considerable aging. For example, our transmitters are almost universally covered invinyl, and the tires on our models are of course rubber.
Ken Runnestrand here in my home town recently reinformed me of the uses of ARMOR-ALL, a rubber and vinyl preservative that is available uiversally at car products shelves. This watery-milky solution is just plain fabulous for cleaning all that filthy, gunk off old tires, restoring them to like new condition. It has a similar effect on dirty, faded transmitter cases. A quick spray on the case, wipe it off thoroughly, and the transmitter is like new.
Ken had a couple of identical transmitters that had
seen side-to-side use for about the past fifteen years without ever being
cleaned, and frankly, they looked pretty worn. He cleaned one of them with
the armor-all, and then showed me the two side-by-side. The cleaned one
looked like a brand-new transmiter. The old one, well, I got to
experiment cleaning it. He also did the same demonstration on a
couple of old tires he had in a box. Same result. This stuff is great!
Try it.
