If you are planning a really big bird in District XII (that's Canada folks) you can do it legally but there are a few bits of "red tape" to follow.
You will need a Special Flight Operating Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada's Regional Office in your area
MAAC has been involved with Transport Canada in establishing a specialized category of SFOC for "Recreational UAVs over 35Kg"
Basically, you have to supply operating information on the model/UAV; what the purpose is for flying it (i.e. not commercial) and details of where you intend to fly it and how. It will have to always be in visual range of course and there may be other stipulations such as solo flying, safety distances etc.
The major item will be getting insurance coverage since MAAC policy does not cover this. If you are going to fly this at a MAAC event then the coverage must be equivalent to MAACs $5 million policy. Don't despair....it has been done !!
For further details and latest updates in this contact the MAAC UAV Advisory Committee Chair Jeremy Cartlidge jkcartlidge@hotmail.com

Coming from the US if you are an AMA members and have an 'approved' "Experimental Category" model you will be able to fly it in Canada. Also your AMA insurance is valid as there is an exchange agreement between AMA and MAAC.
However, you must get information to the Canadian event director well ahead of time. We have a 'fast track' process with Transport Canada which specifically adresses this and he can get the paperwork processed. This started two years ago here for the Rally of Giants held in Arnprior Canada. Also it was used without problems at the Kitchener scalke event in 2008 and 2009 as well as a Giant Scale event in Chatham.
